If You Were Here

If you were here, I would cry
Not out of sadness, but of relief
From the idea of your absence
From the lack of your touch
And your smell and your way of knowing

Everything I don't

If you were sleeping, I would never wake you
For sleep is peace, as is the breath that parts your lips
And swims to me in your dreams of night and rain

But a dream is but a dream
If you wake from it
In the morning dawn of summer's glow

If you were listening, I don't know what I would do
As maybe to fulfill fantasy is to ruin reality
And to force what is to become what's not
Perhaps desire is meant to be kept secret
Even from the one who will have you
While everything else won't
